A Metaphor for Many Things

We cleaned out the fridge a few weeks ago and found a surprise buried in a bottom drawer—an old hunk of cabbage working hard on transforming and maybe even escaping certain doom.

I think I can...

I think I can…

Rose took it out and instead of throwing it away left it on the counter so we could watch what it did next. It’s been a long time since I had any botany, so Rose had to remind me how a head of cabbage can do this: totipotent cells. “Totipotency is the genetic potential of a plant cell to produce the entire plant.” And off it went.

I think I can…

The original hunk of cabbage gradually shrunk as it dried and nourished the new plant.

Ahhh…

When flower buds started to show, Rose gave it a break and potted it so it could form roots and be free. Now it’s joined its bigger cousins in the indoor garden and is flowering happily.

Be the cabbage. Be all that you can be. Do all that you can do.
